What to Expect: South Pacific
Just in time for Valentine’s Day and in celebration of the 75th anniversary of its Broadway premiere, Toledo Opera brings South Pacific to life in a fresh new production. Winner of 10 Tony Awards in 1950, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, South Pacific tells the poignant story of two intercultural romances set against the backdrop of World War II.
The musical follows:
• Nellie Forbush, a spirited nurse from Arkansas, who falls for Emile de Becque, a French plantation owner with two children from his late Polynesian wife.
• Lieutenant Cable, a U.S. officer, who becomes romantically involved with Liat, a native islander.
As these love stories unfold, both characters grapple with societal prejudices while navigating the impending threat of war.

This production features a stellar cast, including:
• Claire Leyden as Nellie Forbush
• Keith Phares, Metropolitan Opera Baritone, as Emile de Becque
• Mike Schwitter as Lt. Joseph Cable
Directed by James M. Norman and conducted by J. Ernest Green, this original production promises a moving and memorable experience for all. The musical will be presented in English with English captions.
