Toledo, OH — A bold new flavor has landed in Downtown Toledo, and food lovers won’t want to miss it. The Kengo family of restaurants has officially debuted its fourth concept—Papa Kato Karaage—a fast-casual Japanese fried chicken spot inspired by tradition, family, and serious flavor. The grand opening celebration kicks off Thursday, June 5, at 3:30 PM with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 30 South St. Clair Street, just steps from the iconic Kengo Sushi & Yakitori.
What is Papa Kato Karaage?
Papa Kato Karaage specializes in karaage, a popular Japanese cooking technique that results in crispy, juicy, perfectly seasoned fried chicken. It’s comfort food done with precision—and heart.
This new concept is named after Isao “Papa” Kato, the father of owner and chef Kengo Kato, whose culinary legacy began in New York City and now continues in the heart of Toledo. The restaurant is not just a new eatery—it’s a tribute to generations of Japanese culinary excellence, reimagined for a Midwest audience.

Meet the Team Behind the Menu
Chef Tommy Bloom, a longtime member of the Kengo culinary family, leads the kitchen at Papa Kato Karaage. Trained under Kengo himself, Chef Bloom brings passion, respect, and creative flair to every plate.
“This restaurant represents everything I love about cooking—learning, creating, and connecting with our guests,” said Bloom. “Papa Kato Karaage is a place where we cook with heart.”

Why Toledo Foodies Are Excited

And to sweeten the launch, $3 draft beer specials will run all opening week long. Plus, all guests attending the grand opening on June 5 will receive a “Bak Bak” rewards card preloaded with three punches—a perfect head start for loyal foodies.
