I am excited to partner with Dove™ Hair on their Love Your Hair campaign to inspire hair confidence in young girls. Dove™ Hair is committed to broadening the definition of beautiful hair and ensuring that hair is a source of confidence, not anxiety for both women and girls. This campaign seeks to empower mothers to give their daughters a lesson in self love with a the message to Love Your Hair. An important message that I can stand behind.

As little girl in pigtails growing up in Ohio, my mother always instilled in me to love my hair. To wear my hair as my fabulous crown. She was a beautician so showing people to love and appreciate their hair was her passion. She treated her hair as a work of art on display for everyone to appreciate. And they did! I grew up watching this great confidence and now I too carry this great quality proudly. I never once doubted the beauty of my hair. I’ve had hundreds of hairstyles and loved everyone of them. Twenty-two years ago I fully embraced my hair and went completely natural. I did the big chop and wore an afro for awhile. I loved it! For the last 20 years I have been rocking my hair in locs. I absolutely love how versatile my locs are. I’ve worn them straight, curly, and even in an updo. Even more awesome is how easy they are to care for.

Now that I am a mother, I have instilled this same love and appreciation to my daughter. She absolutely loves her hair! She even loves to style it herself. She also has had numerous of styles. Her favorite way to wear her hair is in an afro in all its glory! It’s pretty amazing!

I often catch her in the bathroom twirling and flopping her hair around in the mirror. Lol! It’s pretty awesome to watch. On many occasions she will ask if I like her hair. I always ask how she likes her hair? She always says “I love it!” And then I’ll say “Well that’s all that matters, but I love it too!” Then I get that big cheesy smile.

Sadly, Dove™ Hair found that 8 in 10 women feel pressure to wear their hair a certain way. This thinking often starts at an early age. That’s why it is so important that mothers of daughters make a difference and help ensure our daughter grows up feeling confident. Show them that beautiful hair comes in all length, textures, and colors. That there is no standard “beautiful” hair. Frequent conversations about how beautiful my daughter’s hair has definitely been a boost in her overall hair attitude as well as her self-esteem. She is definitely not afraid to express herself through her hairstyles. She knows importantance of keeping her hair clean and well moisture to keep it looking at its best. Lessons that began at an early age.

Dove™ Hair believes a positive role model can greatly impact a girl’s confidence. In fact, a recent Dove™ study found that 82% of girls learn to care about themselves from their mother.

Do tell your daughter that she is a a beautiful queen. Because that is a exactly what she is. Do tell them their beautiful hair is their crown. Because that is exactly what it is. Daughters need to hear this from their mothers at a very young age. So let them hear it. Let them hear it often.

Do you love your daughter’s hair? Tell her why you love her hair and inspire her to do the same by creating and sharing a custom #LoveYourHair animated message with @Dove: http://bit.ly/2gEskJv

  2. What a cutie! I love her hair, and that she has such a great hair role model in you! My daughter has purple glasses just like those, and she loves to flip her fro around too.

  3. Dove creates products that care for every individual’s hair type. Whether you have curly or wavy or stick straight hair, Dove has the right product for you. I love how you help your daughter build her confidence. She is beautiful!

  4. Love this and your daughter is beautiful! I have 3 daughters who’s hair is very different from mine, but I always encourage them to love their hair. Big hair don’t care! 😉

  5. This is a beautiful post! I think it’s so important to embrace our hair and wear it how we want not how we are pressured to be.

  6. My step daughter is 20 now, but when she was younger I always tried to send positive messages to her about her hair. It was sometimes hard because her mom wasn’t as positive and would call her hair nappy and whatnot, especially when I went natural and she wanted to wear her natural hair too. But now that she’s an adult she can make her own choices but I still inspire her with my hair.

  7. A thought provoking post, this. We recently allowed (and even encouraged!) our ten year old daughter to get a side shave – like Avril Lavinge had in 2012 – and she totally rocks it with her own, unique, arty, style. I think it’s important to encourage our daughters to express themselves as they want.

  8. Your daughter is just a ray of sunshine! Her bright spirit and personality just shine in these photos! She has the most beautiful smile and, yes, such beautiful hair! I love Dove products and their positive messages to love yourself – what a wonderful campaign!

  12. This is such a lovely post and what a great campaign! Its so important to encourage girls to be confident, happy and proud of themselves from a young age. You both have amazing hair!

  13. I love that Dove is sharing such an important message. Growing up I had so many chemicals in my hair as a child I didn’t know what my natural hair looked like until I was 25. For this reason, I celebrate my daughter’s hair and she adores it. Her Dad and brother also celebrate it and I think that is so important.

  14. She’s ADORABLE! I love that she is confident with her hair and it’s texture. Dove really made it shine! Wow!

  15. I love that Dove has done this study. So many women are unhappy with their hair. Glad your daughter embraces hers!

  16. I love Dove hair products, and I love this campaign! It’s such an important message for us all to take on board, and I love that your daughter is confident and happy with her hair!
I myself have struggled with my natural curls, and ended up burning half of it off in a chemical straightening disaster about 8 years ago. It took all that time to get back to normal, and now I’m starting to love my curls!! oxoxo

  17. My skin is too sensitive. Therefore have been using Dove products since last few years and happy with the results. Love the hair of your daughter. She is adorable!

  18. Her hair is stunning. I love it and how free flowing it is. Dove always provides products that helps us keep our authenticity rather than trying to change us. It’s amazing.

  19. You and your daughter are beautiful. Such an inspiring message about self-care and self-love you are passing on to your daughter.
