What is the Art in Public Places Program?

The Art in Public Places Program is a collaboration between the City of Dublin and the Dublin Arts Council, a nonprofit organization that supports arts and culture in the community. The program was started in 1988 to enhance the quality of life for Dublin’s residents and visitors by adding beauty, interest, and meaning to the public spaces. The program also aims to stimulate civic engagement, cultural awareness, and creative discovery by inviting artists to create public artworks that reflect the city’s identity and values.

The program has grown from one sculpture in 1988 to more than 60 large and small-scale permanent, temporary, and interactive public art projects today. The collection includes works by local, national, and international artists. An audio tour can be accessed by calling 614-368-6999. You can also visit the full tour online HERE.

One of the best ways to enjoy public art in Dublin is to take a self-guided tour of the city and discover the artworks at your own pace. You can use the map and brochure provided by the Dublin Arts Council, which you can download [here], or use the online interactive map [here]. You can also follow the signs and plaques that provide information about each artwork along the way. Here are a few public art pieces to put on your radar:

Leatherlips
This is the first piece of public art in Dublin, installed in 1990 at Scioto Park. It is a 12-foot-high stone portrait of Wyandot Native American Chief Leatherlips, who was executed by his fellow tribesmen near the site of the park in 1810. The sculpture is open at the top and has limestones that run along the side of it, creating a cave-like structure where you can sit and watch the river or play hide-and-seek.

Field of Corn

Field of Corn, by Columbus sculptor Malcolm Cochran, is one of the most iconic and quirky public artworks in Dublin, located along Frantz Road. This amazing installation features over a hundred giant ears of corn, each 6 to 8 feet in height, arranged in neat rows. The Field of Corn celebrates Dublin’s heritage as a farming community and serves as a memorial to rural landscapes.

Feather Point

Feather Point is a stunning sculpture is a 20-foot-tall cast stainless steel sculpture patterned from trees found on the site, resembling a feather. It is located at Thaddeus Kosciuszko Park and was created by Cleveland-based artist Olga Ziemska. Feather Point was dedicated in 2017 as part of Dublin Arts Council’s Ripple Effect: Artistic Impact of the Scioto River program. The sculpture reflects the natural beauty of the park and the river, as well as the cultural diversity of Dublin.

The Simulation of George M. Karrer’s Workshop

This is a wireframe sculpture that simulates the blacksmith shop that once stood on the site in the late 1800s. The sculpture, located at Karrer Barn, is made of green and gold wires that form a matrix that outlines the shape of the original building. The artist, Brower Hatcher, designed the artwork to conjure a memory of the past and to contrast with the modern surroundings.

Riverboxes

Riverboxes are a unique and fun way to explore the public art and natural beauty of Dublin, Ohio. They are artist-created vessels that contain a stamp, a journal, and information about the location. You can find them by following clues or GPS coordinates in parks along the Scioto River and its tributaries. Riverboxes are inspired by the hobbies of letterboxing and geocaching, which combine map-reading or GPS skills and artistic pursuit with delightful ‘treasure hunts’ in scenic places. Whether you’re in the mood for a hot or cold sub, a bagel sandwich, or a salad, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings at Frank & Carl’s.

The menu had a variety of options, from classic deli sandwiches to more adventurous creations. I decided to go with the 2 Flannels & a Vest, which was a Pastrami, smoked cheddar, lettuce, tomato, spicy mustard, chive cream cheese, and pickle slices served on a steamed Everything Bagel. It was huge, hearty, and heavenly.

Frank & Carl’s also has a great selection of beers on tap and bourbon on the shelves, as well as tea and soft drinks. The service was fast and friendly, and the prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I highly recommend Frank & Carl’s to anyone looking for a satisfying sandwich experience in Dublin.
