Northwest Ohio Foodie Trail: Where To Eat In Downtown Toledo | Shana Was Here

*This post is in partnership with OHIO FIND IT HERE.

I’m so excited to be working with Ohio Find it Here to bring you my very own self-curated Northwest Ohio Foodie Trail, inspired by their Ohio Foodie Road Trip. My trip will feature the very unique culinary scene in Downtown Toledo. You will find a gem on almost every downtown city block. With over 70 restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs to choose from, you are sure to find your new favorite eatery.

The Original Sub Shop & Deli
402 Broadway St.
Toledo, Ohio 43604

A couple of minutes south of Downtown Toledo you will find The Original Sub Shop & Deli. Originally opened in 1979, owners Jackie & Sarkis David introduced the submarine sandwich to Toledo. 36 years later their legacy continued when Maureen Brogan purchased Original Sub. Today The Original Sub Shop & Deli is proudly serving up sub sandwiches with fresh, seasonal ingredients, scratch-made soups and sauces, and locally-sourced cheeses, and jams.

I stopped in last week to check them out and was very pleased with my visit. The first thing you notice is the beautiful mural of Frida Kahlo by the Bowling Green State University School of Art on the side of their building. It’s amazing and the perfect introduction to what you’ll experience inside. Upon entering the Sub Shop I was warmly greeted. While I waited for my turn, I took in the beautiful decor. It was so bright and colorful. The front of the restaurant housed a window full of plants. The walls were adorned with some very cool artwork. The ambiance was just very welcoming.

The menu had a little bit of something for everyone. I decided on a sub from the “The Goats” menu. The Goats” are subs served with peppercorn goat cheese and seasonal jams. I selected the Happy Goat which had turkey, peppercorn goat cheese spread, seasonal jam, grilled onions on a fresh sub bun. It was very good! Loved the bun! All of the flavors married beautifully together.  The Original Sub Shop & Deli is a must stop when you’re in Toledo.

Your lunchtime destination should definitely include a visit to Grumpy’s. Only open a few hours during the day, they are sure to fulfill the needs of many dietary restrictions. They have a great selection of sandwiches, soups, desserts.

Grumpy’s also offer many vegan options including the Impossible Burger, vegan chili, and an eggplant bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwich.

The most famous item on their menu is the Garbage Salad. This salad is huge and filled with mixed greens, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, grilled chicken, raisins, and three kinds of cheese (provolone, mozzarella, and feta) dressed with poppy seed dressing, homemade croutons, house-made pita crisps, and real bacon bits. It’s a whole experience!

Maddie & Bella Coffee Roasters
44 S. St. Clair St.
Toledo, Ohio 43604

Downtown Toledo has quite a few great local coffee shops that I frequent and Maddie & Bella is one of them. They have you covered with all of your caffeinated needs: single-origin pour-overs, creative seasonal espresso drinks, or freshly roasted beans to brew at home.

Maddie & Bella’s story started as a hobby of roasting small-batch beans that very quickly became a high demand. They began their journey as an official business in 2012 when their coffee was introduced in a local coffee shop. Four years later they opened their first coffee shop in downtown Toledo.

In addition to coffee, Maddie & Bella offers a selection of breakfast, brunch, and lunch fare to satisfy your appetite. Check out their menu HERE.

Low Rider Cafe
316 N Michigan St
Toledo, OH 43604

Tacos, Love, & Coffee is Low Rider Cafe’s motto and that’s exactly what you can expect. Opened in August of 2019, Low Rider Cafe has been serving up authentic Mexican food in downtown Toledo.

Their menu offers a grand selection of delicious options from tacos to burgers. They even have a vegan-friendly menu! I decided on a few menu items that sounded amazing.

El Rey (King) Nachos: Steak, Refried Beans, Queso Blanco, Grilled Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Jalapeños, Cilantro, Sour Cream, and Avocado

I live for a messy yet properly made nacho. This nacho is just that! All of these well seasoned and fresh ingredients are piled on top of their house-made tortilla chips. Bravo!

Breakfast Taco: Chorizo, Steak, Egg, Potato, Grilled Onions, Cheese, Cilantro, & Jalapeño

This breakfast taco is hands down the best breakfast taco I’ve ever had. There were so many amazing flavors in this taco! This taco made me decide that I will definitely be coming back for more.

Fish Taco: Beer Battered Cod On Corn Or Flour Tortilla. Dressed With Lettuce, Grilled Onions, Mayo, Tomato, Cilantro, & Cheese

Shrimp Taco: Grilled & Seasoned Shrimp On Corn Or Flour Tortilla. Dressed With: Lettuce, Grilled Onions, Mayo, Cilantro & Avocado.

Both of these tacos were very tasty! The fish taco consisted of a perfectly fried piece of fish that was definitely the star of the taco. The shrimp taco was equally as good with a nice amount of well-seasoned shrimp under a party of fresh ingredients. And Of course you can’t have a proper Mexican meal without Mexican corn. Lower Cafe’s Mexican corn is perfection. Just order it!

I enjoyed every bite and even took a few tacos to my parents so they could experience what I just had experienced. Everything tasted very fresh and was seasoned so well. Low Rider Cafe is a must stop when in Toledo!

Fowl & Fodder
614 Adams St
Toledo, OH 43604

One of the best brunch spots in downtown Toledo is Fowl & Fodder. Their unique menu is created using fresh ingredients from local farmers, bakers, and cheese artisans. Food is made from scratch every day for the utmost quality.

Stop in to enjoy one of their handhelds like the Smashed Burger. The 6 oz Angus beef patty is cooked perfectly on a buttered toasted brioche bun topped with buttered cheese, smoked bacon, whiskey ketchup, and sweet-hot pickles. The Smashed Burger is definitely one of the best burgers I’ve had. It’s just plain good. A five-star burger.

A menu item not to miss is their signature Almond Chicken and Waffles. This pile of waffles and almond crusted chicken nuggets is covered in southern black pepper gravy with a side of Ohio maple syrup for drizzling.

It’s a must that you order this. Those almond crusted chicken bites are prepared perfectly. They have this nice crunch on the outside and was very moist on the inside. The waffle nice and fluffy on the inside and had a light crispiness on the outside. Order it! You won’t be disappointed.

The Heights
444 N Summit St, Fl 12
Toledo, OH 43604

If you’re looking for an elevated brunch experience, head to the Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel and take the elevator 12 floors up where you will find The Heights. This one of a kind rooftop restaurant features ceiling to floor windows for a most amazing view of the Maumee River from every seat.

The Heights is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. On my most recent visit, it was a brunch date with my daughter. Since our visit was during brunch of course we ordered one of their Wood Fired Brunch Pizzas.

We decided on The Farmer. The Farmer was topped with San Marzano tomato sauce, whole mozzarella, prosciutto, asparagus, eggs. I enjoyed every single bite!

We also tried the Blue Berry Almond Pancakes with Potatoes. Another tasty choice for you to consider on your visit to The Heights.
