Well today could not have been a better day. Today is the best day ever in fact. It’s National Pizza Day!!! Hot, cheesy, yummy pizza. I love pizza! I mean I can eat pizza every day. The options of toppings you can put on it are endless.
Today I got ambitious and decided to make a deep dish pizza. And make the crust from scratch! I know! So I pulled up my trusty Pinterest App and searched for a quick and easy deep dish pizza crust recipe. I found one! And it was super easy! I went to the grocery store and gathered all my ingredients and headed home.
While I made the crust, I had my assistant and best kid ever, slice up the toppings. Making pizza with your kids is such a great activity. I usually purchase flatbread that way each of us can make our pizza with whatever topping we want.
The recipe called for 3 1/2cup of flour. I used 3 cups of bread flour and a 1/2 cup of fine cornmeal. I tossed that in a large bowl along with a teaspoon of kosher salt, and a tsp of sugar. Next time I think I’ll add some Italian seasoning too.
Next I had to bloom the active dry yeast. I used Hodgson Mill Active Dry Yeast. Blooming is a process to test whether the yeast is alive and to get it working sooner. I added my yeast to a cup of warm and a teaspoon of sugar and let it set. After about five minutes you should see bubbling. When this happens you know your in business! I waited a few more minutes then added the yeast to the flower mixture with two teaspoons of melted butter.

Next, mix and knead the dough. Unfortunately I don’t own a beautiful KitchenAid Mixer (a gifted one would be greatly appreciated) so I had to knead the dough by hand. For 7 minutes! After kneading the dough roll dough in oil, place back in bowl, and cover with a towl. Let set for an hour. No peeking!!
Preheat oven as high as your oven will go. 🔥
When the hour is up, the dough should be doubled in size. Cut dough in half. Store one in a airtight container and put in the refrigerator. You’re definitely going to want to make another one! Grease a cast iron skillet with butter and press dough into it with your fingers. (Sorry there are no pics. I was hungry and not thinking. I will update soon.) Let dough rest for fifteen minutes.
Now for the toppings!! My topping of choice were tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives, fresh basil leaves, Italian turkey sausage, and turkey pepperoni. Yummy! I also used Classico Pizza Sauce and Kraft Shredded Mozzarella Cheese.
My order of assemblage…
1. Pizza Sauce
2. Cheese
3. Toppings
4. More Cheese!!!
Put pizza in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Remove and painfully wait for 10 minutes. Now slice it up and dig in!!!
Mmmmm…Pizza
When I tell you how good this pizza is, I am not lying. It was so good!! Looks like I’ll be having pizza tomorrow too!
