Pizza Rules Everything Around Me | Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria Brings Their Love of Music, Art and Pizza To Atlanta

Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria ~ West Midtown Atlanta

In 2017, three college friends, Clint Gray, Derrick Moore and E.J. Reed, opened their first Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria in North Nashville. This past May, they brought their Pizza.Art.Music restaurant concept to Atlanta. It is quickly becoming Atlanta’s new favorite artisan pizza destination.

The Experience

Upon entering the West Midtown establishment, you are given your 3 step guide to the ultimate Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria experience. You start by ordering your pizza. There are two options, select one of their Signature Pizzas or Build Your Own. Pizzas come in two sizes, slim (10”) and husky (16”). All pizza dough and sauces are made daily from scratch in the restaurant. Signature pizzas are named after the founders’ favorite hip hop and r&b artist and songs. You’ll find the Cee No Green, Got 5 On It, The Smokin’ Herb, and the Red Light Special on the menu. Look out for their Signature Vegan Pizza, Nothin But A “V” Thing!

I ordered the California Love (Spinach Basil Pesto, S+H House Cheese Blend, Artichoke, Sliced Tomato Blend and Red Onion). I also opted to add shrimp to my pizza. As part of the Slim & Husky’s experience, your pizza is built right in front of you. After selecting all of your toppings, your pizza is placed in the oven to be baked to perfection.

Next, you pay for your food and select your beverage of choice. Slim & Husky’s offers a nice selection of local beers as well as an additional list of craft beers curated by craft beer blogger, Ale Sharpton. If you’re the mood for a refreshing cocktail, check their Ice Ice Babies. I tried the Tea Bozz, a very tasty tea lemonade and vodka frozen treat. Slim & Husky’s also has sweet tea and fountain drinks, including a selection from Stubborn Soda.

You definitely don’t want to leave without ordering their amazingly delicious Cinnamon Rolls. There are 5 flavors to choose from that can be purchased at 2 for $5 or 6 for $12. I tasted all 5 flavors and enjoyed each one. You most definitely should try all 5 flavors! My favorite was the Ms. Berry. The Ms. Berry Cinnamon Roll was made with blueberry and a fresh lemon glaze. Delicious!!

Shortly after ordering, your name will be called to pick your pizza up. Be sure to stop by The Drizzle Station to elevate your pizza a couple more notches. There are 6 housemade drizzles to choose from including Jalapeño Cilantro Ranch, Stone Ground Peach Mustard, and Chipotle Pineapple BBQ.

Now it’s time to sit and enjoy what’s been carefully prepared for you. My pizza was absolutely delicious! I believe a great pizza starts with a stellar crust. Slim & Husky’s got that right! Their crust is awesome and the sauce is very good! Love that spinach basil pesto! My pizza was perfectly baked and I enjoyed every bite of it.

Slim & Husky’s concept is inspired by Hip Hop and R&B culture, which you will not only see in the naming of menu items, but also in the decor. Murals and paintings beautifully grace their walls and bring you into the world of Slim + Husky’s.

Cool Mural located in the women’s restroom.

You will find ample seating inside the restaurant as well as on their outside patio. I loved how bright and lively it was. All that great natural light was perfect for taking pictures! The vibes were great and I can’t wait to go back! #PREAM

Taste & Explore: Columbus, Ohio

Last week my daughter and I took a quick trip to Columbus, Ohio. My daughter is a Justice Girl with Heart Ambassador and was invited to take a tour at their retail headquarters. What an amazing facility and staff they have there! It was very cool to get a behind the scenes look at the Justice brand. Check out the video of the HERE!

12:00 PM

Being that we are major foodies, we had to hit a few places to eat. Before heading to our tour, we decided to grab brunch at SuperChefs. SuperChefs is located in Gahanna, Ohio, about 15 minutes outside downtown Columbus. It’s the cutest spot to grab breakfast or brunch with your little sidekick.

The restaurant features a superhero themed menu that has many delicious offerings. We decided on the Juggernaut, 2 waffle sandwiches with fried chicken, fried hard eggs, American & pepper jack cheese, candied bacon drizzled with maple syrup and Honey. We were very happy to say the least.

4:30 PM

After the Justice Retail Headquarters tour, we headed downtown to check in to our hotel. We stayed at the beautiful Sheraton at Capitol Square. Check-in was a breeze as the hotel attendant was very professional and accommodating. Our room was very spacious and furnished with all the basic amenities plus a great view. The beds were beyond comfortable. Later that night I slept like a baby.

6:00 PM

After resting a bit, we decided to go get a bite to eat. Sage wanted pizza, so I found a place not too far from the hotel with amazing Yelp reviews. Harvest Pizzeria was our destination! This cute little pizzeria is located in the German Village neighborhood. Everything on their menu sounded absolutely amazing!

I ordered the Harvest Salad. It was huge and so so good. We also decided on the Almond Pesto Pizza. YUMMMMM!! Now that’s a tasty pizza!

From the awesome staff to the delicious food, we had an amazing experience at Harvest Pizzeria. Make sure you put Harvest Pizzeria on your foodie adventure itinerary next time you’re in Columbus.

7:00 PM

We were suggested a very cool place to visit that was also in the German Village neighborhood. Not to far from Harvest Pizzeria was The Book Loft, a 32 room book sale. Sage was in heaven! So many books!

7:30 PM

After a few minutes exploring the bookstore, we headed next door to the neighborhood coffee shop called Staufs Coffee. I got my usual, a Honey Latte with Almond Milk. It was pretty delicious. Staufs Coffee has been rated the number 1 coffee shop in Columbus several years in a row and I see why. They have great coffee! “All of the coffees that [they] offer are roasted by [them] by hand, everyday.” As Columbus’s first micro coffee roaster, they achieve to elevate the quality of coffee they offer to coffee connoisseurs like myself.

Day 2

8:30 AM

Our second day in Columbus started pretty early with a visit to Pistacia Vera. Also located in the German Village neighborhood, this coffee shop is also serving up fresh baked pastries. As soon as you walk in, you’re hit in the face with the smell of fresh baked deliciousness coming from the full service bakery in the back of the coffee shop.

The selection is just incredible. You really want to say, just put it all in the bag! I showed a little restraint and just order a coffee. It was hard!! My daughter got an Orange Brioche Muffin. It was real tasty. To her dismay, I ate half of it. Oops.

9:00 AM

Our next destination was to The Kitchen Columbus. Here, Sage was on site taping as part of a special Justice video series. She had the opportunity to interview and spend some time in the kitchen with owners, Anne and Jen. This place is pretty cool. So you get a group of friends together and book a spot at The Kitchen. When you get there you get a little cooking lesson and help with food prep as well. Then you sit down and eat! I just love this interactive dining experience. We were there for few hours. I’ll be sure to come and postthe completed video from the day!

2:00 PM

With the suggestion of a Columbus resident, we made our way to Erawan Thai. Here we indulged in their Pineapple Fried Rice. It was served in a pineapple! Filled with seafood and amazing flavor, Erawan Thai is a definite foodie destination.

3:45 PM

Our last stop was a bit of a surprise. Back in Atlanta, my daughter loved visits to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. What she did know was that Columbus, Ohio is the home of Jenis. So we had to make a stop at the original scoop shop. I just loved her reaction when we turned the corner and she saw the gold Jenis Splendid Ice Creams sign. Pure delight. Fantastic way to end our adventures in Columbus!

Thanks Columbus for a most wonderful time! See you soon!

Celebrate National Pizza Day with ALLORA’s Chef Chris Maher’s Carbonara Recipe

Today is a most delicious day! A day loved by all. Well, at least by me! This day celebrates my most favorite food to eat. It’s National Pizza Day!! Yayyyy! I could eat pizza everyday. I’ve had some pretty amazing pizzas in my lifetime but I personally love making pizzas myself. It’s fairly easy to prepare and you’ll definitely pat yourself on the back when it’s all done.

ALLORA’s Executive Chef Chris Maher, was kind enough to share the recipe to one of ALLORA’s signature pizzas, the Carbonara. This mouthwatering pizza is made with pancetta, cracked pepper, mozzarella, Percorino Romano and farm eggs. Sounds amazing right?!? Well make you grocery list and head to the store. Tonight is pizza night!

“I’ve been making pizza, in one form or another, for more than half my life. I’m fascinated by the seemingly endless possibilities. The pizza itself, acts as a vehicle for us to really create something special.” – Executive Chef Chris Maher

(Yields 4 Pizzas)

For the dough

4 cups “00” flour (if unavailable, all-purpose flour will work)

2 tsp sea salt

1.5 tsp instant dry yeast

1.5 cups water, room temperature

For the sauce

1 pint heavy cream

½ cup grated pecorino romano

1.5 Tbsp cracked black pepper

Kosher salt to taste

For the pizza

12oz fresh mozzarella

1/2lb pancetta, sliced thin

4 fresh farm eggs, room temperature

• Combine flour, salt, and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment. Mix to combine.

• Add water and mix to combine. Then, knead dough on low speed for 10 minutes. The mixture should come together into a unified mass that barely sticks to the bottom of the bowl.

• Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours. It can be refrigerated for up to 72 hours.

• When ready to make pizza, transfer dough to a floured work surface. Divide dough into four even sections.

• Coat four small containers or bowls with nonstick cooking spray or olive oil.

• With floured hands, form each section into a ball. Place one dough ball into each coated container or bowl. Lightly spray the top of each dough ball with nonstick cooking spray or coat with olive oil.

• Cover each container or bowl tightly with plastic wrap, and let rise at room temperature for 2 hours. Each dough ball should double in volume.

• To make the Sauce, simply mix all ingredients together.

• Heat a pizza stone in the oven at 450° F

Assemble the Pizzas:

• On a well-floured surface, stretch out each ball into a 10-inch circle. Use a floured rolling pin if you need it. Don’t worry about the dough being a perfect circle!

• Place one dough ball onto a lightly-floured pizza peel, shake gently to ensure that the dough is not sticking.

• Spread about 1/4 of the sauce over the dough, leaving about a 1/2-inch edge unsauced.

• Top the sauce with a quarter of the mozzarella slices, and prosciutto. Crack an egg right in the center of the pizza.

• Transfer pizza from peel to the hot stone and bake about 5 to 7 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and crust is charred in places.

• Remove from the oven and top with fresh cracked pepper.

• Slice and enjoy!

This week they kicked off the celebration with a Family and Friends event. I was excited to be included in this special occasion.

Lunch with Amber! ( Instagram @sippinintheatl)
I attended the Friends & Family Lunch Event yesterday and once again was blown away. I brought along fellow blogger friend, Amber of Sippin’ in the Atl, to share the delicious experience. Rize sits on the corner of Roswell Road & Hammond Drive under the brand new residential living apartments, Square One. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and given the instructions on how to order. The hard part was choosing which pizza to get. Every single menu item sounded and is amazing. I personally have had all of them, so it was extra difficult for me to choose. I finally decided on the Garden Pizza and the Pear & Walnut Salad. I also ordered a cup of Sweet Peach Tea. Amber ordered the Waverly, as well as the Pear & Walnut Salad and a cup of Black Berry with Tarragon Soda.

Pear Walnut Salad ~ baby kale & spinach, sliced pear, spiced walnuts, smoked bleu cheese, charred red onion, fennel, pomegranate seeds, honey lemon vinaigrette
After placing our orders, we sat at the bar where we could see all the action. With their open concept kitchen, diners are able see their pizza being made, from the gentle stretching of the dough, to putting finished product into the hot stone oven.

Garden Pizza ~ fire roasted tomato, goat cheese, shredded mozzarella, roasted artichoke, roasted shiitake mushrooms, charred red onion, zucchini, watermelon radish, toasted pecan pesto, basil, roasted garlic oil
Shortly after sitting, we were greeted by our waiter.  He informed us that while he was our waiter for this visit,  any staff member would be glad to help us as they were a family and worked as a unit. Love it! Our drinks came out first. I could tell Amber was enjoying her Black Cherry Tarragon Soda by the mmmms and lip smacking that I was hearing in my left ear as she sipped on her craft beverage. Lol! She’s a fan to say the least.
Waverly ~ prosciutto, gorgonzola, shredded mozzarella, asiago, fig jam, balsamic reduction, grana padano

Finally we were presented with our pizza and salads. Everything looked amazing!! Not only did it look amazing, it tasted amazing! I could eat the Pear Walnut Salad every day! The smokiness of the bleu cheese brought that salad to a whole other level! I highly suggest that salad! My Garden pizza was sooooo good. I loved the pesto that was on top. This pizza was nothing but layers of flavor! Bravo! Rize, Bravo.  I consider myself a pizza connoisseur and this pizza is awesome!

We ended this fantastic lunch with a sweet treat!  Yes!! We chose Bourbon Butter Pecan Gelato (I Love Bourbon!) and Strawberry Sorbet. So tasty! Do yourself a favor and visit Rize Artisan Pizza + Salads next time your in the mood for good pizza and excellent service. They’ll be waiting.

Southern Crust Catering Company Launch Party at Wild Heaven Brewery

Thursday, Southern Crust Catering Company celebrated their launch in big style with a private party at Wild Heaven Brewery. Southern Crust offers a full-service catering experience from a 1953 vintage Chevy truck. This beauty is custom out-fitted with a Mugnaini open-hearth pizza oven, incredible sound system and tap handles to pour local brews. Yes! A party on wheels!

Photo Provided by Caren West PR for Southern Crust Catering Company

Guest were treated to unlimited Neapolitan-style, wood-fired pizza. And the pizza was oh so delicious! My favorite of the night was the Roasted Butternut Squash Pizza. Amazing!

Other pizza offerings included, Margherita, Clam, Speck, and Pistachio Pesto Pizza. We also had the opportunity to try their some of their snacks and greens. I loved the kale salad! It was suggested by one of the awesome Southern Crust crew members to put the kale salad on top of a slice of pizza.  Of course I had to try it. He was right. It was amazing. Mmmmmm.

To wash all of this wonderful food down, Wild Heaven Brewery was pouring their cold craft beers. I wanted something light, so I went for the Emergency Drinking Beer. (Best.Name.Ever.) One of my favorite local craft brews.

I went back outside to find that dessert was being served. Guess what it was???? S’mores!! Yesssss. I love s’mores. Really I just love a good burnt marshmallow. But their s’mores hit the spot. Yummy!! What a great experience! If you need a fun catering service,  I would recommend Southern Crust Catering Company, for not only the quality of their food, but also for customer service. That is one awesome crew!
