Summer is here and that means ice cream season is in full swing. There is nothing quite like your favorite scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day. July is also National Ice Cream Month so it’s fitting that you go forth and explore every local ice cream shop Ohio has to offer starting with the 419! Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt

Handel’s has been serving up homemade ice cream since 1945, when Alice Handel started serving her delicious old-fashioned ice cream out of her husband’s gas station in Youngstown, Ohio. Since then Handel’s has been recognized as one of the best ice creams in the world. Each location makes fresh ice cream daily, one batch at a time.

Choose from a variety of over 50 decadent flavors including Bananas Foster, Butter Toffee, Cinnamon Sticky Bun, Coffee, Maple Walnut, Praline Pecan, Caramel Pretzel Crunch, Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, and so many more! Or try one of their delicious sundaes, made with vanilla ice cream, and your choice of toppings that include Caramel, Marshmallow, Pineapple, Strawberry, Cherry, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Syrup, Vanilla Syrup, or Hot Fudge, topped off with a mountain of whipped cream. Mayberry Ice Cream

Located in Sylvania, Ohio, Mayberry Ice Cream is definitely a must-stop. My first visit here was a most amazing experience. The shop itself is super cute. When my daughter and I entered the shop, all of the employees greeted us with the warmest smile and were eager to get some delicious ice cream in our hands. They offer soft serve and hand-dipped ice creams as well as sundaes, milkshakes, ice cream cakes, and concrete mixers. I loved that they also serve coffee beverages. I’ll be back to try one of those!

On this visit, I tried two of their 25+ hand-dipped flavors, lemon and strawberry cheesecake. I had the scoops in one of their fresh-made waffle cones. What a treat that was!

Sweet Experience

One of my favorite scoops of ice cream on my local ice cream journey had to be to Sweet Experience. With 38 flavors of ice cream, including several that are vegan, you will surely find the scoop of your dream. I chose a scoop of their Exhausted Parent, a bourbon-spiked espresso ice cream swirled with bittersweet chocolate chunks. Not only did it described me this week, but it had all of my favorite ingredients in it: bourbon, coffee, chocolate. It was quite amazing! My second scoop was their Sticks & Stones, chocolate ice cream with soft cookie dough chunks, crunchy chocolate-covered pretzels, and a gooey salted caramel ripple. So decadent!

The Sweet Experience also has caramel apples, cheesecakes in a jar, chocolate-covered pretzels, and liquor-infused popcorn. A sweet experience is indeed what you’ll get.

Lickity Split

Another great local ice cream shop you should put on your radar is Lickity Split. The cute walk-up ice cream shop has all the delightful frozen treats you could ask for. The menu is pretty extensive so choosing just one item could prove to be difficult. During my visit, a customer saw I was having difficulty choosing so she told me that their raspberry cheesecake was out of this world. And with that much-appreciated suggestion, I ordered the Raspberry Cheesecake Sundae, vanilla ice cream layered with raspberry topping, and real cheesecake. So good!!

Lickity Split also offers several other specialty sundaes, soft-serve ice cream, smoothies, milkshakes, and cyclones. If you want a bite to eat, they have that too. Check out their food menu that includes: hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese, French fries, onion rings, and salad.

Penguin Palace

Head to Maumee for another friendly neighborhood ice cream shop, the Penguin Palace. The Penguin Palace was founded in 1947 but recently went through a significant renovation. Still holding on to its iconic 1950s design, this ice cream continues to serve up all of your favorite ice cream treats. On my visit, I was eager to try one of their non-dairy options, the Dole Whip, a soft-serve dairy-free frozen dessert. That day they were featuring their Mango Dole Whip. I love it!! It was so refreshing! I would definitely come back every week to try their Dole Whip of the Week.

You can get pretty much any ice cream-based dessert here! In addition to soft-serve ice, the menu includes sundaes, tornadoes, shakes, and frozen yogurt. You can even pick up a dog bone sundae for your pup!

Toozer’s Time Out

Another fun ice cream shop to check out in Maumee is Toozer’s Time Out. Their menu is full of all of your favorites and some that are soon to be your favorites. I was in the mood for something fun and peeped their Rainbow Sundae, made with ice cream, marshmallow sauce, Froot Loops, and whipped cream. They had me at marshmallow sauce. Yum!

Jockos

So when you see deep-fried donuts and ice cream on the menu you run to that ice cream shop. And that’s exactly what I did when saw them on Jockos menu Unfortunately, they were out of the deep-fried donuts the day I went. The menu was pretty large so I asked the two young ladies at the window what else was Jockos known for. There were quite a few, but the Turtle Sundae sounded so tasty! And that it was! It simply had vanilla ice cream, pecans, chocolate sauce, caramel, whipped cream, and cherries on top. Delicious! I’ll be back for that deep-fried donut!

Dogg’s Ice Cream & Bites

I’ve driven past Dogg’s Ice Cream & Bites many times on my way to Perrysburg but was never able to stop. I knew it had to be a good spot to get ice cream because there was always a line. That’s always a good sign. Well, last week I had the chance to try Dogg’s Ice Cream & Bites for the first time.

I ordered a Banana Split. I got a little fancy and ordered it with two scoops of Butter Pecan Ice Cream. It was everything I could ask for and more. I noticed that they had a huge smoker on the side of the building and that there were menu items listed with smoked meats in them. You know I’ll be back for that!
